WHAT IS “SUNDAY’S BEST”?
Sunday’s Best is a project that I created to keep my spirit alive. It’s a collection of music that I grew up listening to and these songs taught me the art of songwriting and singing.
At a young age I learned about Bloodstone, The Stylistics, The Delfonics, Heatwave, Smokey Robinson, Rose Royce, etc. The music they made was such a big part of Mexican Lowrider culture in Los Angeles. I think that’s what made me feel so connected to it. When remaking these songs, I found it really important to stay true to the original versions. Not only are the original recordings the best, but it was a fun way for me and my team to challenge ourselves to really use our ears and sharpen our skills. It’s also a way for me to be able to make music without feeling the pressure of constantly having to write and release new music all the time.
On the first Sunday’s Best, I worked a lot with singer, Stan Taylor, to recreate these songs together. On Volume ii, I called up one of my favorite collaborators, Nigel Hall to help complete the vibe. Along with them, there are a lot of incredible musicians that helped me bring these recordings to life.
